DRIVER'S LICENSE INFORMATION
For Customers Residing in the United States, U.S. Territories, or Canada:
Customers from the United States, U.S. territories, or Canada must present a valid government-issued driver’s license that is not expired and includes a photograph of the customer. Digital licenses are not accepted. The driver’s license must be valid throughout the rental period.
For U.S. Armed Forces members on active duty, an expired driver’s license from their home state can be accepted under the following conditions:
- They must also present a valid military ID.
- They must comply with the military extension policy of the state where the license was issued. Policies may vary by state, so customers are advised to check with the relevant Department of Motor Vehicles for more information.
For Customers Traveling to the U.S. and Canada from Other Countries:
It is important for customers to check with the relevant Department of Motor Vehicles in the states or provinces they plan to visit to ensure compliance with local license laws. Digital licenses are not accepted. The following practices ensure that customers present a valid license at the time of rental:
- The driver’s license from their home country must be valid, not expired, and include a photograph.
- If the license is in a language other than English (or French, for rentals in Canada) and uses a script that is not English (e.g., German, Spanish), it is recommended to present an international driving permit, although it is not mandatory, for translation purposes, along with the home country license.
- If the license is not in English and uses a non-Latin script (e.g., Russian, Japanese, Arabic), an international driving permit is mandatory.
- If an international driving permit cannot be obtained, a professional translation of the license may be provided instead. However, the home country license is still required.
- Customers cannot rent a vehicle with only an international driving permit. The international driving permit is a translation of the home country license and is not considered a valid license or identification by itself.
- Some U.S. locations may require customers without a U.S. driver’s license to provide additional documentation, such as a valid passport or, in some states (AZ, CA, CO, NM, TX), a valid Mexican voter registration card or entry/exit travel documentation.
- Some Canadian locations may require customers without a Canadian driver’s license to provide additional valid government-issued documentation, such as a valid passport.
Other Requirements:
- Photocopies of driver’s licenses are not accepted.
- “Learner’s permits” are not accepted.
- Licenses that restrict the holder to operating a vehicle equipped with an alcohol ignition interlock or similar device are not accepted.
- Temporary driver’s licenses may be rejected if the rental office cannot otherwise verify the customer’s identity or the authenticity of the temporary license. Additional government-issued identification may be requested.
